What is that sooty residue on the wick of my soy candle and how do I get rid of it?

I have a Glade McIntosh soy candle I bought at Walmart. I don’t know what it is but at the top of the wick there are tiny disk-like ash blobs of black residue. There are no instructions on the candle that addresses trimming the wick after the initial trim (they want the wick to start off at 1/4″). Thanks.
